October Spotlight: Halloween Board Games!

Hello everyone!

For October's spotlight on a special collection or item, the librarians at JKL Library have decided to focus on SPOOKY games to celebrate Halloween! Below are four of our favorite horror-themed games that were recently added to our collection.

Pandemic

Having played this game a couple of times, I can say for certainty that this is a fun, fast-paced, and difficult game! Recommended for 10+, even adults will have a blast trying to contain all the epidemics. In this game, players collaborate with each other (rather than play against each other) to try to beat the game. Four diseases spread around the globe and it's race to eradicate them before they infect the world! Yuck!

Recommended reading along with this game: The Hot Zone by Richard Preston.

Betrayal at House on the Hill

In this spooky game, players work with each other to explore until 1 turns EVIL! Then it's heroes against some haunting/ creepy/ crawly/ scary monster or ghost! The heroes powers and monsters powers are all dependent on a roll of the dice so each round of play is never the same twice!

Recommended movie along with this game: The Others starring Nicole Kidman.

Arkham Horror

Inspired by HP Lovecraft, this horror game takes place in a town where portals can open to other planes. Let too many open and a terrifying alien can fight through and take over the world!

Recommended DVD to watch along with this game: Transylvania Twist - a comedy about a book stolen from the Arkham Library!
Ticket to Ride: Halloween Freighter Add-on

This Halloween-themed add-on is perfect for this month! Remember, you'll need to have the Original Ticket to Ride to play! This version comes with fun orange-colored pumpkin trains that add a great twist to this kid-friendly game.

Recommended reading along with this game: DK's Big Book of Trains

Librarians' Note

For our fellow librarians, we have included the RDA and MARC cataloging records as links at the bottom of the each item's page as usual.  We have also included brief summaries of issues faced while creating these records in an attempt to aid other catalogers running into problems cataloging board games. This month we had a pow-wow to update our cataloging policies. In addition, we added a section to reflect some of the items that we feel should be highlighted when cataloging board games. Finally, please don't forget to check out our monthly essay on an cataloging issue!
